Defending champions TeamVodafone ticked the boxes at today’s V8 Supercar pre-season test at Sandown Raceway, using the day to verify pace and bed in a number of new components in their class-leading Commodores.

Car #888 of Craig Lowndes targeted outright speed, and collected valuable data across both sessions, initially running on a bank of used tyres before switching to greens.

He improved from 20th to second, forging forward despite intermittent rain showers.

“It was a really productive day here at Sandown,” said Lowndes. “It was nice to finally get back in the Commodore and do some laps.

“We went through a number of program changes we wanted to test and although nothing mechanically has changed with the Holden, it looks great out there on track.

“All in all I’m happy with what we achieved today.”

Whincup’s mission was to test a range of new car components ahead of the 2012 season opener, and the team was satisfied with the progress made in car #1.

The defending champion ran hard tyres for the duration of the test, and still managed to set a mid-pack time in 17th.

“After a good break and a month’s worth of preparation, it was a great feeling to get back on the track today,” Whincup said.

“The Commodore was great, we had some really major changes we had to test which we mostly got through but the rain interrupted a few things we would have liked to have tested.

“The #1 car was handling really well today and I can’t wait to get to Adelaide in a couple of weeks time.”

Team Principal Adrian Burgess was pleased with the ground covered by both TeamVodafone Commodores today.

“Both cars ran reliably today, we managed to give both the co-drivers a few runs which was good to start to bring them into the program,” said Burgess.

“Both had separate programs with new parts we have been designing over the break and we are pretty happy with how that went.

“Overall it was a good day and both cars ran well, we had no problems with the crew and got through the list of parts we wanted to test with good results so it was a great day.”

Paul Dumbrell and Warren Luff had their first track time in the TeamVodafone cars and were able to turn a number of laps to familiarise themselves with the enduro seats they will share with Whincup and Lowndes respectively.

The first event of the V8 Supercar Championship Series is the Clipsal 500, which will be held from March 1-4.
