Nascar – Ambrose Finishes On Fumes

Marcos Ambrose survived a fuel economy run to finish 19th in the NASCAR SprintCup Series Geico 400 from Chicagoland Speedway today.

 

After charging to the top-ten early in the race, Ambrose’s DEWALT Ford Fusionovercame a gearbox glitch and a rub with the wall, with a long green flag run tothe chequered flag forcing teams to re-calculate their strategies on the run.

“It was a tough day out there,” Ambrose said.

“Early on, we had a car that we could be very competitive with, but with thegearbox issue and the scrape with the wall it was hard.

“Saving fuel at the finish was a difficult deal, we went through an awful lottoday to finish 19th.

“My DEWALT crew never gave, and I’m very thankful for their efforts.”

After starting from the 17th position, Ambrose ran in 16th prior to acompetition caution on lap 30, with the Richard Petty Motorsports crew able to jump by Jimmie Johnson in the pit lane, restarting the race from 15th.

With a car that was running well in clean air, Ambrose rose to 13th before acaution on lap 70 for debris, with the team gaining another position on the pitservice.

The DEWALT Ford Fusion then hit the top-ten for the first time in the race onlap 78, and ran strongly in tenth for an extended period of time, with Ambrosethe second non-Chase contending car on the race track.

The race soured for Ambrose on his lap 116 green flag service when he struggledto engage a gear leaving the pits, losing 10 seconds on the leader of the race,seeing him resume in 16th position.

Setting lap times quicker than the leaders, Ambrose was engaged in a torridbattle with Dale Earnhardt Jnr, running in 15th prior to another debris cautionon lap 145.

Ambrose resumed racing from 18th place, but the racing slowed shortly afterwardswhen Jamie McMurray blew his engine on lap 164.

The Australian’s race was further complicated when he tagged the wall on lap170, with the car drifting back through the field to be running a lap down whenthe fifth caution flew on lap 205.

Fortunately, Ambrose was the beneficiary of the Lucky Dog free pass back ontothe lead lap, with the DEWALT crew swinging into action, with their firstattempt at fixing the damage to the car.

The crew had another opportunity to make repairs when another debris cautionflew on lap 213.

The race to the finish proved to be an economy run, with Ambrose saving fiveadditional laps of fuel in the stint to the chequered flag.

Although number nine Ford ran out of fuel on the last lap, several other carsdidn’t make the distance, with Ambrose classified in 19th.

The race was won by Tony Stewart, the 16th different winner in season 2011, with Kevin Harvick holding down the series lead with nine races remaining.

Sylvania 300 from New Hampshire Motor Speedway.
