Formula Ford – Uhrhane Salvages Podium At Brands Hatch

Geoff Uhrhane returned to the Dunlop MSA Championship of Great Britain podium on the weekend, snaring a hard-fought second place in the second race at Brands Hatch.

Uhrhane qualified his JTR Mygale in third, signaling his intentions for a breakaway start early.

His best lap, a 46.907, was marginally slower than polesitter Jeroen Slaghekke, with the Dutch driver setting a 46.643 on the Indy circuit.

Uhrhane got off to a solid start in the opening race but contact with the rear of fellow Aussie Spike Goddard saw him forced to retire with damage to his front suspension.

Determined to deliver from a good grid position, Uhrhane got away well in the second race of the weekend and was in podium contention until the second-last lap.

A spin saw his podium hopes fall by the wayside and, unable to re-join the race, he was forced to concede with a second DNF.

Uhrhane relished the challenge of a flag-to-flag battle for second place in the final race of the day, showing great skill in keeping a freight train of drivers from wrangling the place from him.

The main battle was fought with Slaghekke, who applied maximum pressure but was unable to find a way around the Aussie who held on to salvage some valuable points.

“It was great to finally finish a race and get home in second after being attacked for so many laps,” said Uhrhane.

“That result lifted my spirits a bit after the two earlier DNFs– it’s been a nightmare run this year and the championship has just gotten away from me.

“The points for second place in the last race were still not enough to stop me falling to sixth, the direction I don’t want to be heading.

“I can only hope that something swings back in my favour for the final two rounds.”

Uhrhane leaves Brands Hatch in sixth place on the standings, comfortably clear of the next driver but over 100 points off fourth placed Nick McBride, a fellow Aussie competitor.
