GP3 – Valtteri Bottas Quickest In Hungary

July 30, 2011

GP 3

After his maiden GP3 victory last weekend, the Finnish driver continued with his good form by topping the second of two Friday practice sessions, just 0.064 ahead of his teammate and this morning’s quickest man James Calado.

The field hit the track on Pirelli’s P Zero slick tyres in much warmer conditions from Practice 1. But the session wasn’t without incident – after just enough time had elapsed for the thirty young drivers to complete their installation laps, Addax Team’s Gabby Chaves stopped at turn 10 bringing out the red flags for the second time today. The Colombian’s #24 machine was eventually towed out of harm’s way, and the session continued with twenty-two minutes left on the clock.

When the track went green again, the next few minutes were as action packed as a qualifying shootout with nearly half of the field taking it in turns at the top of the timesheet. But it was ultimately Bottas who would find the extra pace needed, and by midway through the session he had claimed P1 for his own.

The Finn’s time would go unmatched, with Calado edging the closest to his teammate to take second. The final five minutes were then a battle to see who could take third spot. Addax Team’s Tom Dillmann eventually beat out MW Arden’s Mitch Evans, who had to settle for fourth ahead of Status Grand Prix’s Antonio Felix Da Costa. Marussia Manor Racing’s Rio Haryanto was a late improver to go sixth, with Nico Müller, Michael Christensen, Simon Trummer and Vittorio Ghirelli rounding out the top ten.

Next up for GP3 is qualifying tomorrow morning at 08:50 local time.
