Both fresh from victories overnight, GT sportscar ace Oliver Gavin and Italian touring car star Fabrizio Giovanardi have been confirmed for the Armor All Gold Coast 600 in Surfers Paradise, Queensland October 21-23.

Gavin, who won the latest round an American Le Mans Series at Mosport in Canada this morning, will partner Greg Murphy in Kelly Racing’s Pepsi Max Commodore at the Surfers Paradise event.

Gavin is one of the world’s premier GT sportscar drivers and is a three-time winner of the GT class in both the American Le Mans Series and the Le Mans 24 Hour.

The Englishman drives for Corvette Racing in GT Class in the American Le Mans Series and also at the Le Mans 24 Hour and is a teammate to Richard Westbrook, who will drive alongside Todd Kelly on the Gold Coast this October.

Italian Fabrizio Giovanardi, who clinched the Super 2000 Cup at the Austrian Salzburgring in a Honda Accord on Sunday, has also been confirmed for a re-appearance at this year’s Gold Coast event at Brad Jones Racing and will either partner Jason Bargwanna or Karl Reindler.

The Italian will be one of the most experienced drivers in the field having won the British and Spanish Touring Car Championships, the European Super Touring title three times and the Italian Super Touring Championship twice – his win at the weekend proving he still has what it takes at the age of 45.

Gavin and Giovanardi join this year’s Indy 500 pole sitter Alex Tagliani, European stars Andy Priaulx, Marc Lieb and Dirk Müller, US gun Joey Hand, colourful US veteran Boris Said, Australian IndyCar stars Will Power and Ryan Briscoe, French sportscar ace Simon Pagenaud, Brazilian hotshot Augusto Farfus and Scottish sportscar ace Marino Franchitti to be confirmed in the Armor All Gold Coast 600 field, with the remaining drivers being announced over the coming week.

The international stars will team-up with homegrown Australian talent such as Craig Lowndes, Mark Winterbottom, Jamie Whincup, James Courtney, Steve Johnson, Jason Bright, Will Davison, Russell Ingall, Garth Tander and Rick Kelly.

This year’s event will not only include some of the biggest names in world motorsport, but also from the world of entertainment with the event’s Rock and Race format to continue with nightly concerts at the Broadwater Parklands entertainment precinct.

Gavin also drives a Camaro for Banner Racing in the GT Class in the Grand-Am Sportscar Series, meaning he will race a trio of GM-powered V8 race cars in 2011 when the Pepsi Max Crew’s Holden Commodore V8 Supercar is added to his illustrious racing CV.

WHAT HE HAS TO SAY …

OLIVER GAVIN – PEPSI MAX HOLDEN COMMODORE

“I think the Armor All Gold Coast 600 event is a brilliant idea and just wish there were more of these kinds of races around the world,” said Gavin.

“The fact that they’re also in V8-powered, rear-wheel drive cars that look a huge amount of fun to drive and are somewhat similar to what I’m racing in at the moment makes it even better.

“I’m really looking forward to going down under and competing against some big star names in the series.”

V8 Supercars is a very exciting series, which has got the formula absolutely right in terms of what people want to see in touring cars. They want to hear the roar of an engine and drivers battling wheel to wheel and that’s what it has in spades; what I feel touring cars should be like.

“I think there’ve been some great races at the Surfers Paradise circuit itself and it lends itself to this close kind of racing. The series appears to me to be exciting, dynamic and fan friendly. You feel it works hard to engage the fans and people to come to the races, just like the American Le Mans Series does, so think I’ll feel right at home.”

“I can’t wait! I’m going to be down there racing with, and against, some of the V8 stars plus many other drivers who I compete against or with currently, including my Corvette Racing teammate Richard Westbrook.

“It’ll be time to show them who’s who and what’s what! There are also others out there that I’ve raced against before. I hope Dario Franchitti comes back again this year as I used to race against him in karts when I was about 11 or 12 years old.”
