Geoff Uhrhane filled the highlight reels of the weekend’s second round of the Formula Ford Eurocup at Spa Francorchamps, claiming a confidence-boosting win albeit in extraordinary fashion.

The Aussie open-wheel star showed grit and determination to turn around a recent run of bad results and factor at the front in the first race of the meet.

Setting the fastest lap and a new record in the process, Uhrhane had pace to burn but was forced to settle for second place in the race to the chequered flag after running wide at Eau Rouge.

A damp but drying track greeted drivers for race 2, and Uhrhane took full advantage of a fierce battle behind him to build a lead of over 5 seconds by the half-way point.

A mistake on the following lap allowed championship rival Scott Malvern to draw close, with half a second separating the pair as the race end neared.

An opportunistic move from Malvern into Spa’s infamous bus-stop chicane saw the two draw level before Uhrhane was tagged and spun in the sprint to the line.

Uhrhane crossed the line backwards – and in the lead – winning by a 0.047-second margin in incredible circumstances.

Charged for another strong run, the Aussie driver’s third race came to a disappointing end with the bus stop chicane again playing a part.

Uhrhane tried to thread a pass on the back of a late-braking move but could not arrest the speed of his Mygale in time, hitting the back of Jeroen Slaghekke’s car.

He is determined to learn from the ups and downs of an eventful outing and bounce back this weekend when the Formula Ford Eurocup competition continues at Zolder in Belgium.

“I was a lot more comfortable with the car this weekend and felt confident in challenging for the lead and taking control out front,” said Uhrhane.

“It’s a long lap and the effects of slipstreaming meant you could be doing the hard work out front and taking others along for the tow.

“I had a good lead in the second race before a mistake, it allowed Scott to draw up alongside me and we touched before the flag.

“Somehow I stayed in the lead and took the win and it really fired me up to get away to a good lead and stay clear of other cars in the final race.

“I tried to brake late to set up a pass but it resulted in contact which put me out of the race with a lap to go.

“I’m really looking to learn from this and build on the speed the car showed next weekend.”

The Formula Ford Eurocup series will support the Superleage Formula at Zolder in Belgium this weekend for the penultimate round of the series.
