V8 Supercars – Reynolds Signals Intensions in Townsville

David Reynolds has signalled his intentions to be a future force in V8 Supercars with outstanding pace at the Sucrogen Townsville 400 in northern Queensland this weekend.

Reynolds scored a personal-best third place in qualifying on Sunday, following on from eighth place in Saturday’s Top 10 Shootout.

But in both races this weekend luck was not with Reynolds, who suffered an alternator failure on Saturday after leading the race, and then lost ground in the pits on Sunday at his second pit stop.

Greg Murphy also had a weekend to forget in terms of race results, with finishes of 19th and 20th place respectively in the two 72-lap races held.

DAVID REYNOLDS – #16 Stratco Holden Commodore:

“We have awesome one lap speed,” said David Reynolds.

“The first stint in today’s race I probably tried too hard and killed the rear tyres.

“The second stint I drove pretty well and looked after the car. I was edging up on Murph, because he passed me on soft tyres.

“We came in at the Safety Car and I got put back about 11 spots because we had to queue behind Murph. We tried something different with the strategy, came back in and put the hards on in case there was another Safety Car.

“We would have put the softs back on and gone from there but there was no Safety Car and that’s why we are 23rd.

“It’s disappointing but it’s been a really good event for the team. Our cars are getting better. We can physically see that on the time sheets now.

“Me and Smallie (#16 Stratco Commodore Race Engineer James Small) are really working hard on it and we’ve got it to a good point now.

“I think we can go to any track and be quite competitive and we don’t have to change the set-up too much.

“We’ve built a rocket-ship. The Stratco Commodore is going great. We just have to hope for some luck.”

GREG MURPHY – #11 Pepsi Max Holden Commodore:

“We ran a strategy then that worked for a while there but when the officials decided to call a Safety Car it hurt us badly in terms of strategy,” said Greg Murphy.

“I’m not sure where we would have ended up but it ruined our day because our strategy was very different to everyone else’s and it cost us massively.

“We were not able to run our own race. Instead we were caught up with people, punted off, pushed wide, passed, crashed into and because we were not fast enough at the end.

“We only had two new softs on and two softs that had done the start of the race. It just wasn’t a good enough package to do the job.”

RICK KELLY – #15 Jack Daniel’s Holden Commodore:

“I’m a bit disappointed because I think I could have done a better job this weekend, particularly in both qualifying sessions,” said Rick Kelly.

“That put us back a little in the pack and we got held up by some cars that we had better pace than.

“That’s just my fault for not putting us up the front in qualifying.

“I’m pretty happy to still get away from a reasonably bad round with a seventh and a 13th place.

“We still got good points and we’re still fourth in the championship.

“A lot of guys that we are dicing with in the championship are still doing silly things out there, getting drive throughs, getting turned around, making the wrong pit calls, and so on.

“If we have a bad round and we’ve still maintained our championship position that’s not too bad.

“We need to go a bit better. The whole race was a bit of a non-event for us but that’s part of life.

“The engineering group have done a great job to turn our pace around this weekend but unfortunately I didn’t capitalise on it.”

TODD KELLY – #7 Jack Daniel’s Holden Commodore:

“I was really looking forward to that race,” said Todd Kelly.

“I completely messed up qualifying in the first sector but the rest of the lap was quite good.

“We had a really good Jack Daniel’s Commodore yesterday and we were able to press on and pass people in the race.

“Even though we started a fair way back I was quite keen on getting close to the top 10 today, which is where we should have finished yesterday.

“Right from the start of the race the car felt quite vague and I thought ‘this is gong to be a long race’. Even though we really didn’t do a lot to it, it wasn’t the same car as what we had yesterday.

“I don’t know what it was, whether I bent the steering on a kerb or something else early on, but it was a pretty long, tough race and with the way the car was it just killed its tyres. It didn’t matter how I drove it.

“The only time I passed cars was when people made mistakes and we just didn’t have the pace.

“It’s a bit disappointing but I’m looking forward to Queensland because we are staring to make some progress and the cars are coming good.”
