Fujitsu Series – Thompson Wins Townsville Fujitsu Series Opener

July 9, 2011

Andrew Thompson couldn’t have asked for a better start to the Sucrogen Townsville 400, starting off pole position and winning Saturday’s opening Fujitsu V8 Supercar Series race.

Thompson showed strong form in qualifying, the Monster Energy/ Gear Wrench backed Commodore VE crossed the line seven tenths of a second  ahead of championship rival Nick Percat.
While two safety car periods reduced the 14 lap race to a procession Thompson led from start to finish,  holding off the field throughout both restarts.

“The car ran really well in Qualifying but obviously it was disappointing not being able to take the car to its full potential in the race,” Thompson said.
“The safety cars dominated the race today. I don’t think we had more than three solid laps worth of racing but I can’t be unhappy about taking out the win.

“I’m hoping we will get to race uninterrupted in tomorrow’s races, including the reverse grid race,” Thompson added.

The # 80 VE Commodore will start tenth on the grid for tomorrows reverse grid race.

Grid positions for the third and final Fujitsu Series race will be determined by the drivers finishing position in Sunday’s opening race.
