IRWIN Tools and V8 Supercars have teamed with the Townsville Bulletin to give young survivors and their families of February’s devastating Cyclone Yasi a day they won’t forget – this time for good reasons!

A group of more than 100 students and their family members from the Cardwell and Kennedy State Schools will be guests at the Sucrogen Townsville 400 on Friday.

Both schools and homes of most local families were damaged during the category-five cyclone, which produced winds of up to 285kmh and caused almost $1 billion in damage – the clean up and reconstruction continues on a daily basis.

The group will be joined by Cassowary Coast Regional Council Mayor, Bill Shannon, and fellow councilor, Bill Horsford, who will also accept $2000 worth of IRWIN tools to be used in the reconstruction of several community projects.

IRWIN Tools’ Asia-Pacific Vice-President, Nick Pritchard, said that the hosting of the group had been months in the planning and was designed to bring a little joy to some of the children of the region.

“It is hard to imagine what the people of North Queensland faced during the Cyclone Yasi,” said Pritchard.

“We like to consider IRWIN a community-focused organisation and we use our involvement in V8 Supercars to help leverage initiatives on a regular basis.

“We would like to thank all the children, their parents and teachers and Mayor Shannon for accepting our invitation and we hope they have a fantastic experience. Hopefully we will have a few more V8 Supercar fans at the end of the day – maybe a few more IRWIN Racing fans in particular.

“We hope this gives them a little break from the daily grind of the recovery which will obviously go on for sometime to come.”

The group will travel in two buses from Cardwell to Townsville on Friday morning.

On arrival at the track they will be met by IRWIN Racing’s Alex Davison who will sign autographs and give away gift packs before hosting a BBQ lunch in the Orrcon Steel hospitality area, which has been made available as a “home” base for the day.

The group will also be involved in a mass group shot for the Townsville Bulletin Saturday edition before enjoying the rest of the day’s racing action.

Event organisers have used local suppliers wherever possible to inject further income into the local economy – including bus companies, tee-shirt suppliers, accommodation and caterers.

V8 Supercars Events General Manager, Shane Howard, said his organisation was delighted to play a role in hosting the group.

“We have so many fantastic fans in this part of the world and when we were approached about being involved in this community initiative we did not hesitate,” said Howard.

“It is great to have terrific team sponsors like IRWIN Tools keen to be involved in these types of initiatives and they only mean more when you can link them with a media outlet like the Townsville Bulletin.

“We will be doing everything we can to ensure the group has a day they won’t forget.”

Mayor of the Cassowary Coast Regional Council Cr Bill Shannon fully supports the initiative created by IRWIN Tools, the Townsville Bulletin and V8 Supercars.

“The Cassowary Coast Region is very grateful for the contribution to our re-building and for the boost that an outing to the car races will give to many people whose homes and businesses have been affected by Tropical Cyclone Yasi,” said Mayor Bill Shannon.
