Real Estate Agent Mary Burton, Grandfather David French and Firefighter Mick Bampton, are among five Townsville locals who have signed up to race against TeamVodafone drivers Jamie Whincup and Craig Lowndes at Townsville Showgrounds next Wednesday.

The twist? They’ll be behind the wheel of a 30 tonne tank.

While they are used to muscling their Holden Commodore VEII V8 Supercars around racetracks, TeamVodafone’s Jamie Whincup and Craig
Lowndes will take control of the tanks ahead of next weekends Sucrogen Townsville 400, in what will be the race of a lifetime.

V8 Supercar Championship Series points leader, Jamie Whincup is thrilled at the idea, having never driven anything like this before. “It’s going to be a great race.I haven’t done anything like this before so it’s going to be a big challenge but I’m always up for something new,” said Whincup.

While teammate Craig Lowndes admits he’s been behind the wheel of a tank just once before, he doesn’t think his brief experience will give him an edge. “Word on the street is David French has driven a leopard tank before, and Ian Dyson and Hayden Ludwig both have heavy vehicle experience, so it’s going to be a very interesting race for all of us, and I think it will come down to who comes to grips with the tank first,” revealed Lowndes.

Voting is now open at www.raceteamvodafone.com.au for the public to have their say on which of Townsville’s local heroes should represent the city in the Titanic Tank Race. The winner will be announced on Friday 1st July, 2011.

Vodafone are also giving the general public the chance to join the TeamVodafone drivers for a free breakfast, be the first to view the new-look TeamVodafone livery and cheer on their local Townsville hero as he or she goes head-to-head against Jamie Whincup and Craig Lowndes in a Tank race.

A mammoth obstacle course will be set-up at Townsville Showground’s for the Titanic Tank Race on Wednesday 6th July. Gates open at 8.00am, entry is fee and racing will get underway at 9.00am.
