V8 Supercars – IRWIN Racing Recovery In Darwin

IRWIN Racing enjoyed outstanding speed at Hidden Valley Raceway over the weekend.

Alex Davison, racing the IRWIN Ford Falcon with a new VISE-GRIP bonnet design, was one of the fastest drivers on the track and had the equipment to record two high top 10 finishes.

In the Sunday race, Davison qualified ninth and finished the race in eighth place. He recorded the fifth fastest lap time but skidded on oil left by Jason Bright’s stricken Holden. Had this not happened he could have been in the top five.

This was a turn around on Saturday’s race where he started 24th. Fortunately Davison had the pace to get up to seventh before going off the track with three laps to go, crossing the finish line in 19th.

Saturday’s result was disappointing because Davison was able to carve through the field. Had he enjoyed two top 10 results Davison would have left Darwin on the cusp of the championship top five, but instead had to settle with eighth in the title race.

The series now turns to Townsville in three week’s time.

What IRWIN Racing’s Alex Davison had to say:

“I suppose I am happy that we made a good recovery. I tried to make it as hard as possible in both races by going off the road. On Saturday I lost concentration and made a mistake, Sunday I forgot the oil was there at the race re-start and slid straight off. It’s disappointing to think what could have been. We fought our way up to the top 10 from last, so it could have been a lot worse. Our race pace has been very good and the IRWIN Ford is generally looking after its tyres pretty well, so in both races over the weekend I was able to come back through the field. That part of our performance is pretty good. We are still trying to fine tune, we are working on some consistency and bit more speed in qualifying. Sunday was an improvement, we got back into the top 10, which is better than 24th like Saturday. Things are still ticking along, we are headed in the right direction. Eventually everything will click and hopefully we can get up on the podium soon. I think it’s coming.”

What IRWIN Engineer Daniel Kroehn had to say:

“We are rapt with our performance overall. Unfortunately a better result got away from us (on Sunday), but going off the track was an easy thing to do with so much oil around. Fortunately this happened early in the race giving us time to get back into it. Alex did a superb job to drive back up and get a top 10 result. It’s a credit to him as a professional driver, but he also had a reasonably good car under him. Once again we’ve learned a couple of things and we’re building on our knowledge base to improve the IRWIN Ford. We’re looking forward to Townsville. I’m pretty sure we will be in for a pretty good showing and be able to add another podium to our results this year.”
